Introduction To Herding

Our Dogs
|
Biddable, what good is a working dog that is not biddable? We strive to
produce a working stock dog that not only has natural talent and ability but
they must be sensitive and trainable. Like any breed of herding dog
they are not for everyone, they do not need an iron fist to control them,
with quiet consistent training these dogs are capable of achievements
believed long lost among the old time cattle dog lovers. These dogs
prefer to turn stock by going to the shoulder as opposed to heeling them
into a circle or off fences, they yearn for quiet control, possessing eye
and the ability to read stock. ...scroll down to read more... |

Indy
2002 Red Male
Australian Cattle
Dog
Indy is out of a
working red female, Belle and by a working Blue Male, Peter. Belle earns
her living partnering with Eugene Baldwin of Hillsboro, WI keeping his rodeo
bulls in line, Belle is out of a red female owned by PBR bull rider BJ Schumacker, WI.
Peter, now deceased, was owned by Marty Jones, WI. Indy spent the
first years of his life as our PR dog, traveling all over the nation, he
loves to work and hunt, having many coon, possum' and ground hog trophies to
his credit. He's the first dog I have met that thought that fireworks
are fun. When working tough stock he has no problem putting a bite in
when necessary and is smart enough to learn from his mistakes, he's a
thinker, if doing it one way did not work he's going to try something
different the next. Don't be fooled by his enthusiasm, ask him to
handle baby pigs, lambs or goat kids and he just pushes them along with his
snout.

Dottie
"Patch x Indy"
2007 Red Female
Leaning Tree
Australian Cattle Dog
Dottie is the
product of an outside breeding to a local working female ACD. And wow,
if we only have more of her to offer to the public. Dottie has the
eye, cover, athleticness and self control to be a phenomenal worker.

Leaning Tree
Cyd
2005 Blue Male
Leaning Tree
Cattle Dog
Cyd never takes
"No" as an answer, he is serious worker and has no qualms about biting
anything anywhere, heel, hip, ribs, shoulder or even noses, if it gets in
his face he liable to latch on. When teamed with his brothers for dog
breaking duties he is the power, making a defiant bull wish he had not
strayed.

Leaning Tree
Clyde
2005 Blue Male
Leaning Tree
Cattle Dog
Clyde is easy
going with a lot of eye, ranking him against his brother Cyd and Tank he is
right in the middle, not to tough but not to soft. He wants to please
but has enough drive to give you a challange. Clyde has one fault, he
was cursed with an overbite, although it has not prevented him from doing
his job.
Clyde would love
to be a partner, on his last shopping trip to town he made himself
useful by opening up all the packages, didn't damage anything, just wanted
to see what I bought.

| All our
cattle dogs are reminiscent of the "Little Power Packs" of the old days,
Tank our largest male weights in around 45 pounds and stands about 20" tall,
Wynona our smallest is a mere 25 pounds standing only 13" tall. All
our dogs would love to be lap dogs, small in stature, but large in attitude. |

Leaning Tree
Sandra Dee
2006 Red Female
Leaning Tree Cattle Dog
Sandra Dee is one
of our Royal Red x Reggie pups, she was started on sheep before we knew
better, talk about fetch fiend, if it moves she will bring it to you.
I have started her retraining recently, she is exhibiting a lot of natural
eye and control. She has also spent some time exercising the rodeo
bulls, this pup has the strength and ability of for Grand Dad, Indy along
with the sense to try something new if the previous attempt did not work.

Leaning Tree
Rhonda
2006 Red Female
Leaning Tree Cattle Dog
Rhonda is Sandra's
littermate. As a young pup she had the "Rub My Belly" act down begging
everyone to take her home. For some reason no one picked little
Rhonda, she is the most pleasant pup to be around and is showing talent on
sheep. Rhonda is cool and quiet, but not afraid that tag a nose when
challenged.
Updated June 21, 2008 we started Rhonda on cattle, follow this link to her
first day of work

| Our
breeding program is not about raising puppies to sell, it is about raising
stock dog pups that will mature into dogs that are better then their
parents. Purchasing one of our pups is a privilege, we put a lot of
time and effort into proving and selecting our breeding pairs only producing
pups when we are proving a line or have a demand for a proven mating.
There are risks involved with purchasing pups from unproven lines, and
crossbreds, these risks are the same ones taken by breeders for centuries
producing the dogs we presently recognize by our breed associations. |

Riley
Pictures
2006 Female Border
Collie
Black/White Medium
Coat
Riley came to us
in August, '07 at just a little over a year of age. She was the first
of our dogs that I started from the beginning using Marc Christopher's
Training Program, within the first week of training she had her directions,
stop and walk-up. She is easy to be around, is strong on stock but not
obsessed, keeping a lid on her while working out in the field is
occasionally a major feat.

Jake
ABCA 288799
2006 Male Border
Collie
Black/White Smooth
Coated
Jake's Pedigree & Pictures
We acquired Jake
after Wayne watched his grand-sire (Ollie) at the Yellow Rose Cattle Trial
in SD. Ollie (now deceased) was the first BC that Wayne really liked
and wished he could own for himself. Upon arriving home he called Pete
Carmichael to purchase a pup, we were not lucky enough to get an Ollie pup
but quite please with his grandson. Jake is out of Hooker and traces
back to Pete's Luke dog multiple time. Jake has a piercing eye and a
quiet way of controlling his stock, keeping his stock under control at great
distance sometimes with just a lean left or right
In Jake's first 8
weeks of trialing he placed as follows:
Adel Sheep
and Wool Festival 4th Place Novice Sheep
Rice County
Fair 1st Place Advanced Sheep
Adair County
Fair 2nd Place Novice Sheep
Iowa State
Fair 6th Place Ranch Sheep
Iowa State
Fair 9th Place Ranch Cattle

| What
good is a dog that goes in and makes the same mistake over and over, get's
kicked the same way again and again, to us, no good, more then likely they
will be dead at a young age. Our dogs are products of dogs that are
willing to adapt and change, yes, they may back down, but only to reassess
the situation and come at it from a different direction. This style of
dog is capable of training stock, not just annoying it, they ask first, then
tell, as opposed to the hard headed dogs many are familiar with that just
unleash their fury on anything that is four legged, and sometimes two. |

 Leaning Tree
Royal Red
2004 Red Female
Leaning Tree
Cattle Dog
Royal Red (Buffy)
is the first female pup we held back from our Lilly/Indy crosses. She
was trialed on cattle in Iowa and Kansas as a year old pup, since, she has
produce one litter of pups, once again out-producing herself. Buffy is
a handy partner when it comes to exercising rodeo futurity bulls, putting
just enough pressure on to keep them moving and heeling low and outside just
off the ground.
|

Leaning Tree
Tank
2005 Blue Male
Leaning Tree
Cattle Dog
Tank was the
largest pup in his litter, and he still is. Tall, Muscular and Lean,
he is kind hearted and well mannered but still will asserts his dominance if
needed. Handling sheep and goats he is gentle and kind, team him up
with his litter mates Cyd and Clyde dog breaking rodeo bulls and he is all
business. Tank is the flank man, extremely serious about his job of
steering the single back to the group. When not out working he can be
found sleeping on the couch or stealing the pillows on the bed, house dog
extraordinaire.

Obedience.....to us a working stock dog that is obedient and lacking a
little on his natural ability is still valuable in comparison to a dog with
tons of ability but lacks obedience. A dog that is biddable is one
that can be trained to be obedient, we will cull unbiddable talented dogs
from our breeding program before we cull biddable lacking talent dogs. |

Australian Cattle Dogs
Patch x Indy - May 2009
Pups from
previous mating are working in sales barns and on cattle ranches, these pups
are classic old style ACD's, they have plenty of stock drive and are
biddable. The last litter was predominantly red.
This is a proven cross, producing consistent working dogs.

Border Collies
Riley x Jake - April, 2009
Pictures of Riley / Jake Pups
This will be a
repeat breeding for both Riley and Jake, both parents are easy to be around
with a ton of stock drive. Jake is out of Hooker and by Fly both owned
and trialed by Pete Carmichael of Timber Lake, SD. Riley is out of
good old naturally working farm dogs. Watch for both of these dogs in
2008/2009 in the trial arena.
